Pope Urban II: Speech at the Council of Clermont

Pope Urban II (ruled 1088–1099) is credited with inaugurating the crusading movement in medieval Christianity with his speech calling and sanctioning the First Crusade at the church council held in Clermont, France in 1095. Given that, it can seem surprising that there is no one "official" version of this speech. This document collects different versions as written down by five chroniclers of the first crusade between 1106 and 1108, edited by Paul Halsall and published on The Internet Medieval Sourcebook at Fordham University.
