Prologue and Epilogue to the Code of Hammurabi

While not the first code of laws, the Code of Hammurabi, who was king of the city-state of Babylon c.1792–1750 BCE, is the the earliest one to survive substantially complete. These laws, introduced and concluded by the prologue and epilogue given here, were carved c.1754 BCE in the ancient Akkadian language using cuneiform characters on a stone stele or slab that was discovered in 1901.
