The Deeds of the Divine Augustus (Res gestae divi Augusti)

Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus, known as “Octavian” before 27 BCE and “Augustus” afterwards, was the adopted son of Julius Caesar and the first Roman emperor. This “account of deeds” (res gestae) or of the actions he took during his life was written under his direction. It likely was revised many times and edited into its final form soon after his death; Augustus would not have been called “divine” while he was still living. While it may have been “inscribed on two bronze pillars” as it states in the beginning, it only survives in inscriptions made outside of Rome.
