The Fourteen Rock Edicts of Ashoka

Asoka, who called himself Piyadasi, “Beloved of the Gods,” was the third king of the Mauryan Dynasty in the region corresponding to northern India, where he reigned from about 254 until 232 BCE. He converted to Buddhism in 262 BCE. After that, he had erected many stone monuments proclaiming laws that promoted Buddhism. These inscriptions come from one of the most famous groups of these monuments.
